Alrighty - looking for advice from photo-type folks.
Our Variable Pay comes in mid February (it’s like yearly bonus based on both how the company is doing and how your personal reviews have been. Both are very very good this year)
My baseline is 15% of my salary and I scored high enough that I may get more than that.
SO! Lights… I want lights. I’ve always considered myself a landscape or nature photographer. I did one wedding as a favour and man, never again. Hated it.
Twice now though, I’ve done baby pictures and loved it. I adore kids and the experience was great (much less stressful that the wedding, let me tell you! lol)
Anyway, I own three Canon flashes two 580 EX’s and one 580 EX II. These have worked so far, but the amount of flashes I’d have to pay to achieve the stops of light that I want is just silly so anything strobist is out
Sooo.. I considered Alien Bees. I hear a lot about how good they are for the value and let’s be honest, at $500 each for the Canon Flashes they’re pretty much the same price ;)
I’ve been eyeballing a package. However, these are not available in Canada so I’d pay a small mortgage to get them shipped.
Then I got an email flyer from our local camera store - they have an Elincrom package that looks like a super deal check it out here the softboxes are a little small, but I think for that price I can’t beat it even without them. AND it comes with built in radio triggers. There’s an Octobox and a striplight softbox that i want anyway that I’ll just get at the same time.
In the end, it’s looking like about $2400 for the kit and the two soft boxes that I want and I can just pick it up at the store in town - only a few dollars more than the Alien Bees plus shipping.
I’m pretty sure it’s a no brainer - from what I’ve been investigating Elinchrom is an excellent product. Any input/stories?
I am getting a crapload of money Alien Bees or Elinchrom ..input?
Geez, it’s 1:30am and I’m just opening today’s mail (it was our Anniversary so we were out for the night - and yes, he’s sleeping I’m not. lol I have tomorrow off and he doesn’t but we’re going away for the weekend)
Anyway, I digress. Opening my mail and my book “The 50 Greatest Photo Opportunities in San Francisco” arrived! We’ll be back again on our yearly trip there the last week in March and there are some great areas that I haven’t seen yet in three years that I’m going to check out :)
Can’t wait - my old boss and I are heading up to Banff next weekend to just hang out and take some pictures. She’s got a new Rebel and dying to learn how to use it and I just love spending weekends in Banff :)
Our person who permanently works the over night shift, monday - thursday is sick again. Just got off a 2 hour call with a work mate covering for her tonight and my boss. Looks like I’ll be working the over night for the rest of the week.
I’m ok with that - overnights never bugged me as I’m more of a night person than anything.
Just finished rebuilding the rotating schedule for a team of 12 for the next three months to cover her shift (she’s on long term sick leave).
phew. now I’m tired, but want to stay up at least another 2 hours (4am) so I’m ready to stay up tomorrow night until 6am.
Bonus though, I now get Friday off AND managed to pull 12.5 hours of OT. usually when my shift makes some crazy change, i end up with no OT.
It’s -22C here so I’m feeling kind of housebound and bored. Loaded up the RAW files for some pictures from October into Lightroom and played around a bit. I’m not a big one for post processing so this is really outside of my comfort levels - going to start posting some now.
Don’t even ask how i stumbled across this - however, we used to travel a lot by train in the 70’s (in sleeper cars for multiple days) and Via Rail in Canada sure enough flushed the toilets directly onto the moving tracks.
I can recall me and my brother having a great time with this as most, if not all of them, if you held down the leaver you could see the tracks rushing by.
I do recall one long layover in Montreal where we were not allowed to use the washrooms until they left the station (for oh so obvious reasons) and thought we were going to die waiting.
I’m assured Via Rail stopped this practice and now use a holding tank…
Yay! Got our dates for San Francisco this year - I’ll be heading there the end of March.
The first year we did all the tourist things. Last year, I checked out some other areas and did “cheap eats” rather than all the seafood places (mmmm, chicken and waffles).
Now I need to start making plans for this year! I know I want to actually cross the Golden Gate - I made it ON it last year, but not across. I want to spend more time in Golden Gate Park and at the Ocean.
Now I have to wonder, what’s left that’s unique when travelling to the U.S. anymore :(
We got Wal-Mart, now Target, and hell, our dollar is worth more right now.
There used to be an odd excitement when driving over the border crossing and heading to a store that we didn’t have with products we couldn’t get. We’ve noticed the last few trips there’s less and less of that.
Man, if we get In and Out Burger there will be no reason to ever go down again. lol
