6am to the gym, change, warm up, 7am - 8am, personal trainer (I think he wants to kill me..), 8am-4pm work (yeah, I show up a bit late, but I have my bosses ok to do so and miss one break during the day. Love him). And now, it looks like 5-11 will be going to my second job.

I may have to also add a trip back to the gym after work to soak in the hot tub for an hour. It’s a 24 hour gym, and just may be worth the one less hour of sleep….

This is just until I get the prescription mess figured out, the Visa paid down from using it to cover prescriptions for the last year, and things back on track. Although that may very well take a year. I do make very good money at my regular job.. just not enough money to be single and sick, I guess :(

Just got home from running a 2.5 mile Rave Run race and I’m feeling amazing about myself. Bared my midriff in public for probably the first time since I was a child. Finished in 28 minutes (11:20 mile) which is better than I ever did when I was sporty and 40 lbs lighter. I love the look on people’s faces when I tell them I’m a runner. Weight is not an indicator of health or fitness. There were girls bigger than I am who were running it and several who still finished before me. Rock on ladies!

People look at me funny when I, at 47 years old, insulin dependant diabetic, and 250 pounds, also say I’m a runner. I’ve managed to get in the top 1/3 of my age range in my last few runs.

I was organizing my drugs one morning for the week and decided to get out my macro and have some fun with it. I think I have almost everything there. This is a day in my life of diabetes.

TOP ROW:
My arm, with poke holes and bruises
My two insulin pens - one short acting, one long acting
The needles for the long acting pen
The big photo at the top is the lancets for drawing blood to test

SECOND ROW:
That’s a vial of Lanits - long acting insulin
A test strip with my blood on it
a lancet ready to draw blood
My sharps container - the biohazard sign cracks me up
Then a big picture of my iphone for my alarm every 2 hours

THIRD ROW:
Pink pills for bed time
Green pills one at supper one at bed time
Pill bottle… not sure which ones
My meter with a lancet ready to draw blood

FOURTH ROW:
Test strips - 17 to a barrel. I test 10 times a day minimum
More Pink pills - also night time
Short acting insulin pen with needles. I take this every time I eat or exercise

FIFTH ROW:
white pills - morning and supper
Blood Meter
Big picture in the middle of an old lady pill box so I take my pills at the right time.
Sharps container again ($5,000 fine for each offence of improperly disposing of diabetic supplies. EEK!)
Blood sample (love the macro ring light reflection in the blood)
Needles for the short acting insulin pen
Long brown pills - morning
Long acting insulin pen - 10pm.

After that last pen, I get to sleep until 6am then start over again. My iPhone alarm literally goes off every two hours between 6am and 10pm telling me to either eat/test/or take drugs.

Oh - and despite being in the $70,000 income range, I have an appointment on Tuesday at the WalMart for a second job. My benefits pay 80% of my prescription costs… but the remaining 20% right now is such a killer than I haven’t bought groceries since I was diagnosed. When I see my new doctor in July, I’m going to try and see if there’s cheaper drug options. However, until then, second job it is.

6-7am gym

8-4 work

5 -11 work

11-6 sleep

Saturday derby

Sunday boyfriend

So my daughter was interviewed at the kick off parade for the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo today. I screen capped it, and put it on facebook.

Part of the interview said that she was a born and raised Calgarian who worked as a supervisor at Starbucks.

The conversation that then pursued between my son and daughter cracked me up :)

Oh the joys of getting to poke yourself in the gut with a needle four times a day, still be sicker than you should be, and fending off phone calls from your mom wondering why you’re so lazy, not going to work, why are you on sick leave, why aren’t you hanging out with your friends, i don’t understand why you’re still in bed…

you’re never too old for your mom to make your already depressing days worse.

1 week on insulin, three changes by emergency room doctors/diabetic clinics and I’m still pushing out an average of 18.6 for blood sugar (5 is normal, we’re hoping for 6-8 for me for now)

Going back to bed… I think I’ll just turn the phone off for the next two days.

Those here who know me in real life have seen this. That’s me. That’s me at 326 pounds down to me last month at 232 pounds (still heavy but so so much healthier than I was. Helps being six feet tall)

I’m very proud of the changes i’ve made. I’ve lost almost 100 pounds, I did it over the course of years and in the proper healthy way of changing what I eat and then exercising.

Exercising… I only started last year. Feb of 2012 I went to the gym for the first time… I went five days a week, 3 hours a day.

Let that sink in… went from sedentary blob to a bit of a gym addict. I swam, I ran a 5k every month of 2012. I joined Roller Derby. I can skate 24 laps in 5 minutes. I’m 47. I’m happy with my progress the past few years.

Today, I had my quarterly doctors visit (I’m diabetic) and I left there feeling like shit. I’ve spent the afternoon in tears, and I feel like I’ve accomplished nothing and it was all in my stupid head.

He’s mad because I gained 2kg in the last year (my first gain ever, since losing, I may add). I showed him all of paperwork that my personal trainer gave me. yes, I’ve gained weight, but I’ve lost almost 6% body fat this year. my muscle has gone up. My muscle is in the 90% percentile for a woman in my age range.

I’m also fighting a PCL tear so have been under a “no use” order for six weeks… not moving, not doing anything… it’s been frustrating.

So when I tell him all this he goes “well, aren’t you just full of excuses”

So I left feeling like absolute shit after he tore into me for gaining 2kg in a year.

Oh. I’ve also suffered from horrible RLS since i was a small child. Dopamine has helped the last five years, but has now stopped working. I’m at the max dose and can’t go up anymore. I haven’t seen my sleep specialist since I lost weight (because I no longer need to sleep hooked up to a breathing machine) so I tell this same family doctor, my RLS is making me insane. I look like a Parkinson’s patient, I flail my arms constantly day and night, I have to SLEEP IN THE TUB to stop the jitters.

He tells me to get more calcium. seriously. He then refuses to prescribe the Ropinirole that I’ve taken for five years and, instead, gives me Clonazepam (Valium)

So seriously… my doctor of 21 years basically just gave me a big “fuck you” on all points today

I don’t know how young girls survive this shit when an old woman like me can’t deal with it from the freaking family doctor.

I’m watching Facebook turn Red this week in support of the Supreme Court hearings and say to myself “I marched for this. I met cool people, I traveled to another country, I faced the Westboro Baptist Church first hand. *I* marched for this.”
